Flood study for bridge design
Peloton Land Solutions, a Westwood company prepared a flood study and H&H analysis and design for a bridge crossing of NRCS lake no. 17, located on an unnamed tributary to Honey Creek. The analysis calculated flows through the bridge and into the lake, determined the peak water surface elevation of the lake, and set the span and low chord elevation of the bridge to provide freeboard and prevent flooding of adjacent properties. Our team was able to reduce the project cost by improving the angle and alignment of the bridge crossing and increasing the bridge span length. This solution involved a complicated balance of valley storage requirements and protection of waters of the U.S. (cost of fill vs cost of mitigation).
  • Balance fill in reservoir flood pool with cut areas to maintain adequate valley storage
  • Scour analysis and erosion protection
  • Avoid upstream impacts
  • Incorporate hike & bike trail
